Reports according to NAIJ.com indicate that a mob has reportedly set Sterling and Diamond bank in Apapa, Lagos state on fire after a mobile police officer attached to the bank shot a tanker driver dead. Banks in Apapa are shutting down and evacuating their personnel following the incident by protesting tanker drivers.
Trouble started after a Policeman was accused of shooting a tanker driver and running into Diamond Bank for refuge. Irate mob set the Diamond bank on fire as the management of the bank refused to release the trigger-happy Policeman to the mob.
PM News gathered that a trailer driver wanted to park in front of the Diamond Bank Apapa since indiscriminate parking had overtaken the entire Burma Road by trailer and tanker drivers. A Policeman attached to the bank was said to have objected and in the process, a brawl ensued. The Policeman was alleged to have fired at the driver, killing him immediately, while two more drivers were also shot dead as they tried to intervene. Mayhem was unleashed and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.
According to NAIJ.com, an eyewitness who spoke to them said the incident started when the tanker driver refused to give the police officer money, which led to an intense argument, and the officer fired by mistake.
The police officer fled the scene when he realized the driver was dead. The tanker drivers who were angry chased the officer into the bank where he was been protected by security guards. The bank’s refusal to give up the police officer provoked the drivers the more. The driver’s colleagues then moved to set the bank ablaze, destroying properties and other valuables.
At the time of this report, Policemen from Rapid Response Squad (RRS), anti-riot squad and Area B command, as well as operatives from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECEOFT have arrived at Apapa.
